Dear subscriber,
This is journalist Farida Rustamova and I want to tell you about some changes that are on the way! Our small team will soon launch a brand new English-language newsletter containing in-depth analysis about Russian politics and economics.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, we began to report on Kremlin politics, President Vladimir Putin, and the dynamics within the Russian elite. There was a lack of information on these topics, and it was important for us to shine a light on one of the most secretive, and dangerous, regimes in the world. We were one of the first to report on wartime changes in Putin’s inner circle, and our articles garnered hundreds of thousands of views. We were cited by international media outlets, including El Mundo and CNN.
Now, we want to take our project to the next level. So, we will shortly be launching a bi-monthly English-language newsletter. Our mission is to spotlight the most important economic and political trends in Russia, as well as help readers understand the workings of the Russian elite.
Why read our newsletter?
It will facilitate decision-making. Although we hope to add value for readers from all walks of life, above all we aspire to be useful to those who have a professional interest in Russia – from business people and policymakers, to journalists, academics, and diplomats.
Our writers are highly experienced journalists who regularly speak to highly-placed sources in Moscow.
We will identify the most compelling trends, providing all the analysis, insight and context you need to make sense of them.
Convenience. We will condense everything you need to know about Russian politics, public life, and the economy into one newsletter that arrives in your inbox every two weeks.
We value your time! And we guarantee each newsletter can be read in just 10 minutes. We will not dwell on superficial or irrelevant information.
Each newsletter will be structured to include analysis of at least one key political issue/event, and one key economic issue/event – ensuring we cover the full spectrum of Russia news. We will also highlight 2/3 less obvious (but also important) developments.
Over time, we will change the name and design of our newsletter – but not immediately. We also plan to introduce a paywall. But this will come later.
Our team
Each newsletter will be written and edited by a group of professional journalists who have years of experience analyzing Russia. Part of our team will work anonymously for security reasons.
I will be the main author of the newsletter. I have been a journalist focusing on politics for over 12 years, reporting for independent Russian outlets including Meduza, and the BBC Russian Service. Over the course of my career, I have written dozens of investigative reports about Putin's family, high-ranking officials, and other aspects of the Russian elite. My essays have also been published by The New York Times and the Financial Times.
Our new writer is Margarita Liutova. She has been covering Russian economics since 2011. After working for the business daily Vedomosti, where she wrote about economic policy-making, she was employed by Russia’s Central Bank to help develop a website on Russian monetary policy and economics. More recently, she returned to journalism, covering the economy for independent outlets TV Rain, and Meduza.
Undertaking a new venture like this is both exciting and challenging, and we want to express our gratitude to the Foundation for Democracy and Liberal Values for their support of the launch.
